Amanda Batula Didn’t Get a Prenup—Here’s Why She Wishes She Did.
Prenups should be fun. No prenup? NOT FUN! Amanda Batula, the designer, influencer, and star from Bravo’s Summer House, just came out and said she wishes she had a prenup with her beau, Kyle Cooke, on a recent podcast. Now, she’s urging others to learn from her mistake. But what can you do if you are already married and didn’t sign a prenup? We take a deep dive into Amanda’s podcast confession, what you can still do to protect your ass(ets), and much more. Let’s get into it!
❤️ A Bravo Love Story
But first, let’s do a quick history lesson on Mr. and Mrs. Batula. Amanda and Kyle’s relationship started with season 1 of Summer House, where they definitely shared some ups and downs. There was laughter, tears, and even some infidelity (on Kyle’s part). They started their business together (Loverboy), and we all watched it flourish. A few seasons later, and many sending-it-summers, the two tied the knot in 2022 (without a prenup). Although the prenup was discussed, they never got one. However, they allegedly had a “wedding agreement” where Amanda’s parents required Kyle to pay them back should he be the reason the wedding gets called off.
📣 Amanda’s podcast confession heard round the Bravoverse
“I messed up major,” Amanda recently said on the Trading Secrets podcast. “I should have protected my assets.” She opened up about her finances and brand growth since tying the knot with Kyle. She said she wished she had gotten a prenup, and how she totally changed her mind around the sentiment of one. She admits that she previously thought prenups were tabloid-y but realizes now that they’re just like health insurance—for the “what ifs” in life. You hope you never need it, but if you do, it’s everything.
Even though she admits to starting off season 1 of Summer House making about $50,000 from her marketing job and $25,000 from her Bravo check, it’s clear that her finances have drastically changed since then. She noted that she’s turned down brand deals for “hundreds of thousands” of dollars because they didn’t feel authentic (which is why we love you, Amanda!).
✅ Why prenups = Health insurance
Forget the tabloid myths. Prenups are your modern-day health insurance, but for a relationship. Prenups aren’t about divorce; they’re about having money conversations, sharing financial information through financial disclosure, and aligning on rights and obligations. Not only can prenups help you and your fiancé walk into the marriage more prepared and confident, but they can also be your backup plan should things not work out. Win-win!
Plus, getting a prenup is easier than ever now. Amanda and Kyle could’ve gotten one done sitting at the Hamptons house, poolside, in a matter of a few hours with HelloPrenup. It’s not as scary as it used to be portrayed in the movies! They’re affordable, convenient, and dare we say… FUN?
😅 Didn’t sign a prenup? Here’s what you (and Amanda) can do
Maybe their next signature Loverboy flavor is “Freshly signed postnup,” and it tastes like summer, freedom, and financial security. A postnup is a contract, similar to a prenup, which is signed after the wedding takes place. The enforceability can vary from state to state, but in New York, they’re generally enforceable as long as you follow the laws laid out by the state. Postnups can ensure all assets are kept separate, including revenue from any new business venture, any brand deals, and a new, much higher Summer House salary.
Other options you may have include physically keeping assets separate and not commingling, though this does not guarantee that they will be treated as separate property in a divorce. You can also set up an estate plan to ensure assets are distributed properly upon death.
💍 The bottom line is that prenups are fun
Amanda said it best: “Everyone should get a prenup.” Amanda’s growth on the Summer House series has been remarkable to witness. She went from Kyle’s girlfriend, whom he snuck into the house on occasion, to sitting next to Andy Cohen at the reunion, full-blown entrepreneur, designer, and mega-influencer. Within that growth, she’s also learned to respect the concept of a prenup and wishes she had one herself.
Remember, a prenup isn’t about being pessimistic, it’s about being realistic. But, Amanda, you’re not out of options. You may be able to get a postnup in New York if you want to ensure your assets are protected! And if you’re reading this and not married yet, don’t forget to get that prenup before walking down the aisle so you don’t make the same mistake as our girl Amanda.
